7075 aluminum is composed of 90.0% Al, 5.6% Zn, 2.5%Mg, 0.23%Cr, and 1.6% Cu, though these numbers nominally fluctuate depending upon manufacturing factors.
Density of 7075 aluminum is 2.81 g/cm3 (0.102 lb/in3), which is relatively light for a metal. 7075 aluminum alloy is one of the strongest aluminum alloys available, making it valuable in high-stress situations. The copper content of 7075 aluminum increases its susceptibility to corrosion, but this sacrifice is necessary to make such a strong-yet-workable material.
Mechanical properties of 7075 plate
Summary of Mechanical Properties for 7075 Aluminum Alloy
Mechanical Properties | Metric | |
Ultimate Tensile Strength | 572 MPa | 83000 psi |
Tensile Yield Strength | 503 MPa | 73000 psi |
Shear Strength | 331 MPa | 48000 psi |
Fatigue Strength | 159 MPa | 23000 psi |
Modulus of Elasticity | 71.7 GPa | 10400 ksi |
Shear Modulus | 26.9 GPa | 3900 ksi |
The modulus of elasticity for 7075 aluminum is 71.7 GPa (10, 400 ksi), and it's shear modulus is 26.9 GPa (3900 ksi) . The measure of a material’s resistance to deformation is given by its modulus of elasticity and shear modulus. Generally, this alloy is strong and resists deformation well, which suits it for applications which need a tough-yet-light metal.
7075 aluminum alloy has a tensile yield strength of 503 MPa (83, 000 psi), which means it takes 503 MPa of stress on a piece of 7075 alloy before it cannot return to its original shape. This value shows the huge benefit of alloying aluminum, and why 7075 is the best choice for structural materials for frames.
7075 aluminum has an ultimate tensile strength of 572 MPa (83000 psi), which is impressively high considering its low density. Therefore, 7075 aluminum is usually used in high-risk applications such as military and skyscrapers.
Shear strength is the ability of a material to resist being sheared by opposing forces along a plane, just as a scissor cuts through paper. As the two scissor blades close, their opposing forces act on the cross sectional plane of the paper and cause it to fail “in shear”. This value is useful in torsional applications (shafts, bars etc.), where twisting can cause this kind of shearing stress on a material.
The fatigue strength of 7075 aluminum alloy is 159 MPa (23, 000 psi). Type 7075 aluminum is often used in the aerospace industry, which has increased concern for fatigue failure. A material can still fail, even though it experiences a force much less than its yield point. If this stress is cyclical, meaning that the material is periodically loaded with this force enough times, micro fractures can occur which weaken the material and will eventually cause it to break. The fatigue strength is a measure of a material’s ability to withstand this cyclical loading, and is useful for applications where a part created using this material is subject to repetitive loading cycles (such as in aircraft or motor vehicles).
Processing technology of 7075 plate
7075 aluminum alloy can be further improved by how it is strengthened using a process known as heat-treatment, sometimes referred to as “tempering.” This method uses high heat (300-500 ºC) to reconfigure the metal’s crystal structure to strengthen its overall mechanical properties, and can literally make-or-break a material. There are many methods of tempering 7075 aluminum, each tempering process gives 7075 aluminum its own distinct values and characteristics.
Heat treating
7075 may be solution annealed at 900 Degrees F for 2 hours at temperature, followed by a water quench. The alloy may then be given a precipation hardening (aging) heat treatment.
Annealing
Annealing is done at 775 Degrees F, holding for 3 hours at temperature. Controlled cooling at 50F per hour should then be used down to 500F from which it can be air cooled.
Aging
Precipitation strengthening (aging) is done at 250 Degrees F for 24 hours and air cooled for T6. The T73 temper requires heating to 225 Degrees F for 8 hours, followed by 24 hours at 325 Degrees F and then air cool.

Application of 7075 T6511 aluminum plate
7075-T6511 aluminum is 7075 aluminum in the T6511 temper. To achieve this temper, the metal is solution heat-treated, stress relieved, then artificially aged. The stress relief is accomplished by stretching the metal by an amount that depends on the type of standard wrought product being made (extrusion or tube). The metal is straightened after the stretching operation. It has the second highest strength compared to the other variants of 7075 aluminum.
Application of 7075 T7 aluminum plate
7075 T7 aluminum is 7075 aluminum in the T7 temper. To achieve this temper, the metal is solution heat-treated and stabilized by artificial overaging. It has the second highest ductility compared to the other variants of 7075 aluminum.
Application of 7075 T73 aluminum plate
By comparison, T73 has lower strength, more flexibility, and provides a better product in extended high-stress environments. To reach this state, the material is heat-treated and aged to T6, but then they continue aging it. By overaging the material into the T73, it loses some strength but increases in durability. It is also more corrosion resistant. Toughness decreases along with temperature for aluminum 7075. And for this reason, T73 is better suited for extremely low-temperature applications such as cryogenics.
- 7075 T73 is used for components that need to be more flexible or routinely undergo high and continual stress.
- The base of the airplane wing is a typical example of the 7075 T73.
- Gears, valve parts, shafts, and landing gear are more commonly made from 7075 T73.
Application of 7075 T7351 aluminum plate
7075 T7351 aluminum is 7075 aluminum in the T7351 temper. To achieve this temper, the metal is solution heat-treated, stress relieved, then stabilized by artificial overaging. T7351 temper provides improved resistance to stress corrosion cracking. This is an aircraft alloy with very high strength and excellent performance at low temperatures. It has good machinability and excellent finishing characteristics. It can be hardened by heat treatment and/or cold work. It has good machinability and hardness, and is not easy to weld and stress corrosion cracking.
- T7351 is commonly used for aircraft manufacturing and other aerospace applications that do not require corrosion resistance.
- 7075 T7351 aluminum alloy provides the highest strength of ordinary screw mechanical alloy.
- The better stress corrosion resistance of T7351 tempering makes alloy 7075 a reasonable substitute for 2024, 2014 and 2017 in many of the most critical applications.
