Processing technology of 2024 aluminum bar
2024 cold treated aluminum bars are used in structural areas where stiffness, fatigue performance and good strength to weight ratio are required. The 2024 aluminum annealing between cold working operations can be carried out at 650°F for 2 hours, and then air cooled.
2024 is an age hardening aluminum alloy, which responds to heat treatment to complete strengthening (aging). After heat treatment, it has high strength, good machinability and moderate corrosion. However, the heat treatment process is strictly required.
T4 temper is achieved by heating at 920°F followed by cold water quenching and aging at room temperature. Reach T6 temper through the same 920°F and quench, then hold at 375°F for 10 hours and air cool.
Annealing shall be carried out at 750°-800°F for at least 2 hours and then slowly cooled in the furnace. This will anneal 2024 aluminum from the heat treated condition.
Aging T4 temper is obtained by heating at 920°F and quenching in cold water. Then aging occurs at room temperature. Other conditions are the results of controlled quantity cooling after T4 temper.
